Indian Easy Dal Recipe

Tarka dal is a simple lentil soup that's a hit every time. With just a few aromatic spices, you can transform a few humble lentils into a creamy, intensely flavourful dish, which can be served on its own, or as a side dish.

  • 350 g Red lentils
  • 5 tbsp Oil (add ghee instead of oil to enhance flavour)
  • 1 tsp Mustard Brown Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 7 Fresh Curry Leaves
  • 2 large Kashmiri Red Chilli
  • 1 Medium Onion
  • 1 Small Tomato
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • 4 Cloves Garlic
  • 2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 handful Coriander
  1. Rinse the red lentils until the water runs clear then cook the red lentils 30 minutes in 750ml of water. Remove any scum on top. Make sure to keep stirring occasionally to avoid dal sticking in bottom.

  2. Once Desired Thickness reached remove from flame. To make the dal runny add water as desired.

  3. Heat oil in a pan. Once oil is hot add mustard seeds and let it splutter.

  4. Add cumin, curry leaves, Kashimiri red chilli, Onion, Ginger, Garlic, Tomato and saute until the onion is translucent about 8 minutes.

  5. Add the chilli powder, turmeric and salt Sauté for 2-3 minutes to cook out the spices.

  6. Add the cooked red lentils to the sauted onion and spices. Cook for 5 minutes. Make sure to keep stirring occasionally to avoid dal sticking in bottom.

  7. Garnish with coriander.
